Six Indian Sites Added to UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List

National: India has made significant progress in its bid for UNESCO World Heritage recognition, with six new sites added to the tentative list, marking a crucial step toward full heritage status.

The announcement, made by the Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO, was later shared by India at UNESCO on the microblogging platform X.

The newly listed sites include Kanger Valley National Park in Chhattisgarh, the Mudumal Megalithic Menhirs in Telangana, and historically significant locations such as the Ashokan Edict Sites along the Mauryan Routes.

Additionally, the Chausath Yogini Temples, spread across multiple states, the Gupta Temples of North India, and the palace fortresses of the Bundelas in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have been included.

With these additions, India now has 62 sites on UNESCO’s tentative list, a prerequisite for future nomination to the prestigious World Heritage List.

The Chausath Yogini Temples, one of the most distinctive entries, are known for their circular arrangement of 64 Yogini sculptures housed in individual shrines. These temples, often situated atop hills, feature intricate stone carvings and represent a unique aspect of India’s ancient architectural and spiritual heritage.

According to UNESCO, the Yoginis symbolize a blend of mystical and protective forces, embodying both alluring and formidable qualities. This recognition highlights India’s diverse historical and cultural wealth, strengthening its position as a global hub of heritage conservation.

India currently boasts 43 properties inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, comprising 35 cultural sites, seven natural sites, and one mixed property.

The country made a historic stride in heritage preservation last year by hosting a UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting for the first time in 2024. During this event, Assam’s Moidams—an ancient burial mound system of the Ahom Dynasty—secured the prestigious World Heritage status, reinforcing India’s commitment to protecting its rich past.
