Assam: Rare Himalayan Griffon Vulture Found Distressed in Dhubri
Guwahati: A Himalayan Griffon vulture, a species that has become increasingly rare in the region, was discovered in a distressed state near the River Gaurang in Dhubri’s Kawanbari area.
The vulture, which was struggling to fly and appeared weak, sparked concern among locals and conservationists.
Eyewitnesses reported that the vulture was initially mistaken for an injured bird before it was identified as a Himalayan Griffon (Gyps himalayensis), a species native to high-altitude regions. The villagers, worried about the bird’s condition, alerted local wildlife authorities, prompting immediate action.
The Himalayan Griffon is crucial to the ecosystem, as it helps in natural waste disposal by feeding on carcasses. However, its population is dwindling due to habitat destruction, food scarcity, and exposure to harmful substances, particularly the veterinary drug diclofenac, which has caused significant vulture deaths across South Asia.
Wildlife experts speculate that the bird’s distress could be due to starvation, dehydration, or poisoning from contaminated food sources. A local conservationist stated, “The vulture’s weakened condition signals potential environmental challenges that need immediate attention.”
Locals have been advised not to disturb the vulture, and the incident underscores the need for vulture conservation in the region. Experts emphasize the importance of preserving natural habitats, ensuring safe food sources, and raising awareness about the essential role of these scavengers in maintaining ecological balance.
