Arunachal: Inaugural Dorjee Khandu Memorial Archery Tournament Kicks Off in Tawang

Itanagar: The inaugural edition of the Late Dorjee Khandu Memorial District Level Archery Tournament was officially launched today in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.

The event was inaugurated by Kento Jini, the state’s Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, alongside Lumla MLA Tsering Lhamu, Deputy Commissioner of Tawang, senior government officials, and public leaders.

Organized by the Tawang District Archery Association and sponsored by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his family, the tournament aims to promote traditional archery while incorporating Olympic-style training to elevate the skills of young archers from the region.

Speaking on the initiative, an official from the organizing committee stated, “For the past year, youths have been receiving training in Olympic-style archery to enhance their skills, with the ambition of competing in national and international events in the future.”

A total of 33 teams are competing in the tournament, with 30 teams in the traditional archery category and three teams in the Junior Olympic-style category. The five-day event, which began today, will run until March 19.

This initiative has been widely lauded for its dual focus on preserving indigenous sports traditions while providing young athletes with a platform to showcase their talent. In addition to honoring the legacy of former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, the tournament serves as an important step in preparing the region’s archers for national and international competition.
