Assam CM Announces Major Expansion of Lachit Barphukan Police Academy
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled plans for a significant expansion of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, introducing new educational and training facilities to enhance both law enforcement capabilities and public welfare.
The announcement was made following the inauguration of the academy’s first phase at Dergaon in Golaghat district, a ceremony presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Emphasizing the historical significance of the initiative, Sarma highlighted that the academy is the first major institution named in honor of the legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, who played a pivotal role in defending Assam against Mughal invasions. He expressed gratitude to Shah for his support in preserving and promoting Barphukan’s legacy through the establishment of this premier training institute.
The upcoming expansion will include a CBSE-affiliated school, a nursing academy, and a skill training center, aimed at benefiting not only police personnel but also the general public. Sarma further revealed that discussions are underway to introduce a police medical academy in the future, adding another layer of specialized training and healthcare services to the facility.
Addressing broader governance achievements, the chief minister underscored the substantial improvement in Assam’s law and order situation, which has contributed to the state securing investment proposals worth over ₹5 lakh crore at a recent business summit. He pointed to a remarkable increase in conviction rates, which have surged from 5% to 25% over the past three years, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to justice and security. Additionally, he noted a significant decline in crime, particularly those targeting women, reinforcing the state’s progress in ensuring safety and accountability.
With these developments, the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy is set to become a comprehensive center for law enforcement training and community development, reflecting Assam’s growing focus on institutional excellence and governance reforms.
