Mizoram to Launch Universal Healthcare Scheme with Rs 5 Lakh Coverage Per Family

Aizawl: The Mizoram government is set to introduce the Mizoram Universal Healthcare Scheme (MUHCS) on April 1, offering comprehensive medical coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family.

Designed to provide cashless treatment across various economic backgrounds, the scheme will extend its benefits to all residents, including government employees.

Health Minister Lalrinpuii confirmed the initiative on March 16, noting that a final discussion on the official launch will take place with Chief Minister Lalduhoma on March 17. The scheme will be implemented in alignment with the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), ensuring coverage for pre-existing conditions and hospitalisation costs.

MUHCS will facilitate free treatment at government-run hospitals, primary healthcare centres, and empanelled private or church-run hospitals. While several hospitals in southern Mizoram have agreed to participate, negotiations are still underway with private healthcare facilities in Aizawl.

Registration for the scheme commenced in March and will continue until May, with offline registration available at sub-health centres. Online registration is set to begin in April, and those who miss the May deadline will have another opportunity in July, though a penalty fee will be applicable.

The scheme offers three contribution-based plans tailored to different levels of care. The general plan requires an annual payment of Rs 2,500 for treatment in general wards, while the standard plan costs Rs 5,000 per year for semi-private ward access. For those opting for private ward facilities, an annual contribution of Rs 10,000 is required.

Additionally, government employees, including contractual and muster-roll staff, will contribute through a monthly premium ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 1,500. The initiative is expected to significantly improve healthcare accessibility and financial protection for Mizoram’s residents, strengthening the state’s medical infrastructure.
