Sikkim Pledges Robust Security Measures at Crucial Northeast Law Implementation Summit

Gangtok: In a significant gathering aimed at streamlining the application of newly enacted criminal laws across the Northeastern region, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang engaged in a high-level meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The core focus of the session centered on evaluating the region’s readiness and execution strategies for the three recently passed legislations.

Chief Minister Tamang, addressing the assembly, emphasized Sikkim’s unwavering dedication to national security, a paramount concern given the state’s geographically sensitive location. He articulated, “As a border state with China, Nepal, and Bhutan, Sikkim prioritizes national security. Our government is committed to strengthening law enforcement, judicial efficiency, and forensic capabilities to enhance security.”

Sikkim Chief Secretary R Telang provided a comprehensive report detailing the state’s advancements, hurdles, and strategic adaptations to the new legal framework. The Sikkim government has initiated several key measures to ensure a seamless transition, including bolstering border surveillance to mitigate security risks, enhancing intelligence infrastructure for proactive law enforcement, and upgrading police technology for improved security management.

The discussions also encompassed broader aspects of policing and judicial reforms, with CM Tamang advocating for the strengthening of digital infrastructure in police stations, expanding video conferencing facilities to enhance legal accessibility, upgrading forensic laboratories for evidence-based investigations, implementing specialized training programs for law enforcement officers, modernizing police stations with advanced technology, and enhancing cybercrime awareness and response capabilities.

He further reiterated Sikkim’s commitment to police modernization and initiatives aimed at women’s safety, ensuring the state remains equipped to address contemporary security challenges.

CM Tamang conveyed his appreciation to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Assam government for hosting the event, recognizing it as a pivotal platform for shaping the future of law enforcement in the Northeast. Senior officials, including Sikkim’s Director General of Police Akshay Sachdeva, Principal Secretary to the CMO SD Dhakal, and Law & Parliamentary Secretary Suraj Chettri, were also present at the meeting.
