Bardang Buzz: Badminton Bonanza Brings Star Power to Sikkim’s Courts

Gangtok: The Advanced Technical Training Centre in Bardang, Sikkim, witnessed the grand finale of the 3rd State Ranking Junior U-19 & 1st Majhitar Open Badminton Championship 2025 yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the region’s sporting landscape.

A staggering 300 athletes, including national-level players hailing from Sikkim and its neighboring states, converged for the event, organized meticulously by the Badminton Club of Majhitar in collaboration with the Badminton Association of Sikkim.

Former MLA Namchi Singithang Krishna Rai graced the closing ceremony as the chief guest, taking the opportunity to distribute badminton rackets to the champions, a gesture intended to ignite a passion for the sport among the youth.

The event was further elevated by the presence of Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Raj Kumari Thapa, who joined as a special guest, and MLA West Pendam LB Das, who served as the Chief Patron.

Adding a touch of celebrity to the competition, an exhibition match entertained the audience, showcasing the sporting prowess of MLAs NB Pradhan and LB Das, who triumphed over the Majhitar Badminton Club team in a thrilling men’s doubles encounter.

The championship spanned a wide array of categories, catering to diverse age groups and skill levels, including veterans’ divisions (35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+), open categories (men’s and women’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles), and junior U-19 events (boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles, mixed doubles).

All participants who secured victory or runner-up positions were rewarded with trophies, certificates, and cash prizes, recognizing their dedication and skill.

The tournament’s growing prominence has solidified its place as a cornerstone event in Sikkim’s sports calendar, playing a crucial role in nurturing badminton talent and motivating young athletes to strive for excellence in higher-level competitions.
