Tripura Launches Ambitious Smoke House Project to Elevate Rubber Quality
Agartala: The Tripura government has commenced the construction of 28 state-of-the-art smoke houses, a pivotal initiative designed to significantly improve the quality of rubber sheets produced within the state. This strategic move is expected to enhance the market value of Tripura’s rubber, bringing increased economic benefits to local producers.
With a substantial financial backing of ₹37.50 crore, the project is being funded under the central government’s Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. Subhasish Das, Director of the Tribal Welfare Department, has confirmed the government’s commitment to expedite the construction, targeting completion within a six-month timeframe.
Tripura, recognized as India’s second-largest natural rubber producer following Kerala, boasts an impressive 1,10,648 hectares of rubber plantations. These plantations yield approximately 1,10,717 metric tonnes of rubber annually. However, a significant disparity exists, as only 4% of the state’s natural rubber undergoes value addition processes, with the remaining 96% being exported in its raw form.
Officials from the Rubber Board are optimistic that the implementation of these modern smoke houses will result in a marked improvement in the quality of rubber produced. This enhancement is anticipated to translate into higher earnings for the state’s rubber growers, thereby strengthening the local economy.
