Assam: Sivasagar Secures National Spotlight in Eco-Tourism Initiative
Guwahati: The ancient town of Sivasagar in Assam has been designated a key destination under the Indian Ministry of Tourism’s Challenge-Based Destination Development (CBDD) program, a component of the Swadesh Darshan scheme.
This recognition places Sivasagar among 42 sites nationwide chosen for focused development within the Eco-Tourism & Amrit Dharohar Site category, signaling a significant push towards bolstering sustainable tourism infrastructure.
The CBDD initiative, a strategic sub-scheme of Swadesh Darshan, strategically divides selected destinations into four distinct tourism sectors: Spiritual Tourism, Culture & Heritage, Vibrant Village Program, and Eco-Tourism & Amrit Dharohar Sites. This categorization allows for targeted development strategies tailored to each region’s unique characteristics.
To ensure effective development, the Ministry of Tourism has disseminated a comprehensive template to State Governments and Union Territory Administrations, guiding the creation of detailed action plans and project proposals. These proposals are subjected to rigorous evaluation based on predetermined parameters and guidelines, securing that only well-structured and impactful projects receive final approval and funding. The scheme’s scope extends beyond mere infrastructure upgrades, encompassing soft interventions designed to significantly enhance the overall visitor experience.
The Northeast region of India has witnessed substantial representation in this national initiative, with multiple destinations selected across various categories. Along with Sivasagar in Assam, other notable selections include Kibitho in Arunachal Pradesh, Langthabal Konug in Manipur, Nartiang Village and Mawphlang Village in Meghalaya, Impur Village in Nagaland, and Gnathang Village and Kabi in Sikkim, highlighting the region’s diverse tourism potential.
