Assam: Severe Riverbank Erosion in Kathalmurighat Leaves Families Homeless

Kathalmurighat, Bajali – Severe riverbank erosion in Kathalmurighat, Bajali, has left several families homeless as large sections of land continue to be consumed by the river. The worsening situation has sparked widespread frustration among the local population, who are urgently calling for intervention from authorities.

With the absence of a permanent bridge, locals are forced to use makeshift bamboo bridges, creating hazardous conditions for daily travel. This situation poses significant challenges, especially for pregnant women and schoolchildren, who face increased risks while navigating these precarious paths.

Residents have expressed their dissatisfaction with the administration, accusing them of failing to implement effective erosion control measures. Every year, vast stretches of agricultural land, homes, and community spaces are lost to the river, yet no substantial steps have been taken to address the ongoing crisis.

Adding to the frustration, locals have criticized Bhawanipur MLA Phanidhar Talukdar for allegedly neglecting developmental work in the region. The situation is further exacerbated by the near-collapse of a nearby mosque, adding to the community’s growing concerns and urgency for immediate action.
