Arunachal Pays Homage to Adi Warriors in New Memorial Inauguration

Itanagar: A solemn ceremony unfolded today in the remote Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, marking the inauguration of a memorial dedicated to the indigenous warriors who bravely resisted British colonial forces during the Third Anglo-Abor War of 1893-94.

The newly erected 1894 Mirem Batum Lingkang War Memorial, situated at Adi Pasi, stands as a lasting testament to the strategic brilliance of the Adi warriors from Pasi Village.

Their successful defense of their ancestral lands relied heavily on innovative guerrilla tactics and the construction of formidable stone barricades, effectively halting the advancement of the British expedition.

The inauguration was presided over by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who articulated the profound significance of the event. “This is a truly historic occasion, a moment to finally recognize and honor the unsung heroes who selflessly gave their lives to protect our land from the encroachment of colonial rule,” Mein stated during his address. He further emphasized, “Their sacrifice indelibly etches the participation of our people in the broader narrative of India’s freedom struggle,” while commending the local community for their collective efforts in funding the memorial entirely through their own contributions.

In his speech, the Deputy Chief Minister also underscored the critical need for a balanced approach to development, advocating for environmental stewardship alongside progress. “Genuine progress is not merely defined by the proliferation of infrastructure and industry; it is fundamentally measured by our commitment to preserving our invaluable forests, rivers, and rich biodiversity,” he asserted.

Addressing a matter of regional concern, Mein also broached the subject of the contentious Upper Siang Multipurpose Project, proposed for the Siang River. He called for a thorough and open public discourse to examine the potential benefits of the project, particularly in light of China’s ambitious plans to construct a 60,000 MW dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, located upstream.

The inauguration event drew a diverse gathering of dignitaries, including Minister for PR, RD, Transport & Cooperation Ojing Tasing, Adi Baane Kebang President Tadum Libang, Secretary General ABK Vijay Taram, and a multitude of other local officials and respected community leaders.
