Sikkim MP Urges Immediate Action on Vanishing Springs and Glacial Flood Risks
Gangtok: In a compelling address during the budgetary discussions for the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Sikkim’s Lok Sabha representative, Indra Hang Subba, voiced deep concern regarding the accelerating depletion of spring water resources across the Himalayan region, with a specific focus on the state of Sikkim.
Subba emphasized the critical need for immediate government intervention to combat this growing crisis.
Subba passionately advocated for the allocation of dedicated funding towards comprehensive Springshed development initiatives under the Dhara Vikas Yojana. He argued that only through substantial financial support could effective strategies be implemented to revitalize these vital water sources, ensuring long-term sustainability for the region.
Beyond water scarcity, the MP brought attention to the escalating threat posed by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Subba underscored the potential for these catastrophic events to inflict widespread devastation, and implored the ministry to prioritize funding for in-depth research and the development of robust mitigation strategies to safeguard vulnerable communities.
Furthermore, Subba highlighted the exemplary performance of Plastic Waste Management Units in Yuksam and Padamchen within Sikkim. He proposed that the successful operational model employed by these units be considered for national replication, thereby enhancing waste management efficiency across the country. The MP’s address comes as climate change continues to exacerbate water scarcity and glacial hazards in the Himalayan region, demanding immediate and decisive action.
