Sikkim BJP Chief Casts Doubt on Government’s Subletting Crackdown Resolve

Gangtok: Sikkim’s political landscape witnessed a sharp critique as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sikkim chapter president, DR Thapa, voiced skepticism regarding the state government’s commitment to enforcing its recently announced measures against license subletting.

Thapa, while acknowledging the initial steps taken by Minister Bhoj Raj Rai, expressed a deep-seated apprehension about the administration’s follow-through.

“While Minister Bhoj Raj Rai’s strict action against license subletting is a good beginning, I have strong feelings that the government will not implement this,” Thapa declared, highlighting a lack of confidence in the government’s ability to maintain its stance. His reservations stemmed from what he perceived as a pattern of inconsistent policy implementation by the current administration.

A key point of contention for Thapa was the government’s capacity to effectively monitor and hold accountable large corporations registered outside Sikkim, which are often implicated in subletting practices. He suggested that political considerations might ultimately dictate the government’s approach, indicating that “the subletting business represents a significant vote bank.”

This observation hinted at a potential conflict between the government’s regulatory responsibilities and its desire to maintain political support, raising questions about the true intent behind the recent enforcement drive, especially considering the existing laws that already prohibit subletting.
