Assam Congress Leader Demands Release of Unedited CCTV Footage

Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has formally requested the public release of unedited CCTV footage from the Assam Legislative Assembly. This comes after the alleged chaos involving MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on March 21, 2025.

In a letter to the Assembly Speaker, Saikia underscored the need for transparency and accountability in documenting legislative proceedings.

Saikia stated that members present in the House witnessed an honourable MLA allegedly chasing and attempting to attack opposition legislators. However, despite multiple CCTV cameras, footage capturing the commotion near the opposition benches was not properly recorded or made available. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of the CCTV cameras in documenting opposition statements and debates.

The Congress leader demanded that all Assembly proceedings be recorded accurately and made accessible to the public without edits or alterations. He urged the Speaker to ensure impartial recording and visibility of all legislative proceedings. Saikia’s concerns are compounded by recent media reports claiming that MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi warned of harsher protests against opposition legislators.

Given the seriousness of the situation, Saikia emphasized the need for swift action to ensure the safety and security of all Assembly members. As the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly since 2016, Saikia’s request for transparency and accountability is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the legislative process.
