Ashok Singhal’s Communal Remarks Spark Outrage Ahead of Rabha Hasong Council Polls

Guwahati: In a high-stakes push for the upcoming Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) elections, Assam minister Ashok Singhal addressed a rally in Dariduri, Golaghat, on March 26, extending support to NDA candidate Jonali Rabha. However, his speech has triggered widespread outrage due to remarks seen as communal and divisive.

During his address, Singhal remarked, “When we think of Goalpara, only caps come to mind. Only beards come to mind,” implying a specific community. He further alleged that “one community has destroyed Goalpara” and called on the people to “unite and fight to win.” In a direct attack on the opposition, he dismissed the Congress party, stating, “There is no point in voting for Congress anymore, as Congress has nothing left even to eat.”

The minister’s comments have been widely criticized as an attempt to communalize the political discourse ahead of the crucial council elections. Opposition leaders have condemned the statements, accusing Singhal of stoking communal tensions to polarize voters and deflect from core developmental issues.

Adding to the controversy, Singhal faced questions regarding the recent arrest of journalist Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar, whose detention under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act has raised serious concerns about press freedom in Assam. However, the minister evaded the topic, refusing to offer any explanation. His silence has drawn sharp criticism from media bodies and opposition parties, who argue that the arrest reflects an alarming crackdown on journalistic freedom.

As the RHAC elections approach, the political landscape in the region remains charged. Campaigns have turned increasingly combative, with parties intensifying their outreach efforts while facing mounting controversies. Singhal’s remarks have further inflamed tensions, amplifying concerns over the tone and tactics being deployed in the final stretch before the polls.
