Assam: AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam Slams Minister Ashok Singhal for “Communally Insensitive” Remarks

Guwahati: AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam has strongly condemned Assam Minister Ashok Singhal’s recent remarks made during a public gathering in Goalpara, accusing him of making statements that hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community and disrupt communal harmony.

Islam criticized Singhal’s reference to Goalpara as a place characterized by “caps, beards, and pyjamas,” stating that such comments are not only insensitive but also an attempt to stereotype the region’s residents. He argued that religious attire is a personal matter and should not be used to target any community.

Calling for a focus on more pressing governance issues, Islam urged Singhal to prioritize addressing unemployment, reviving defunct industries, and improving the cleanliness of Guwahati instead of making remarks that could incite religious divisions. He accused the minister of deliberately attempting to destabilize Assam’s long-standing tradition of communal coexistence.

Reaffirming Assam’s legacy of unity, Islam highlighted the cultural ethos of “Shankar-Azan,” symbolizing harmony between Hindus and Muslims. He warned that any attempts to create rifts between communities would not succeed, emphasizing the state’s commitment to social unity.

Islam also took a direct swipe at Singhal’s background, pointing out that as someone originally from Rajasthan or Haryana, the minister should refrain from interfering in Assam’s communal affairs. The comments have further intensified the political discourse in the state, with calls for a more responsible approach from public representatives.
