Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 1,000 Amidst Widespread Destruction
International: A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Mandalay, Myanmar, on March 28, resulting in a significant loss of life and widespread destruction. The death toll has risen to 1,002, with 2,376 individuals injured, according to Myanmar’s state media.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the death toll could potentially exceed 10,000, highlighting the severity of the situation. In response to the crisis, India has dispatched 15 tonnes of relief materials, including solar lamps, food packets, and kitchen sets, to Myanmar on an IAF C 130 J aircraft. This effort, dubbed ‘Operation Brahma,’ demonstrates India’s commitment to providing assistance to those affected by the disaster.
The Thai government has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, where at least 10 people have died, and 100 construction workers have gone missing following the collapse of an unfinished skyscraper. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate survivors, with emergency responders digging through the rubble by hand.
The Myanmar government has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations in the worst-hit regions and has formally sought international assistance. The United Nations has allocated $5 million to initiate relief efforts, while China and Russia have dispatched aid and rescue teams. India has also provided humanitarian aid to support the crisis-hit nation.
The situation in Myanmar remains dire, with severe power and water shortages reported. In a rare global appeal, Myanmar’s junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, has urged countries and organizations worldwide to assist in relief efforts. As aftershocks and widespread destruction continue to challenge rescue and relief efforts, the international community’s support is crucial in addressing this humanitarian crisis.
