Gangtok: Dichu, a strategically important village nestled near the Dok-La Post at the intersection of India, China, and Bhutan, has achieved a significant milestone with the arrival of electricity.
This marks the first time the remote settlement, considered India’s first border village in this region, has been connected to the power grid, a move celebrated as a crucial step towards inclusive growth and bolstering national security in the frontier.
The initiative that brought light to this isolated outpost was set in motion following a visit by Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur on January 4, 2025. During his interaction with the residents of Dichu, Governor Mathur was made aware of the village’s lack of electricity, a fundamental requirement for modern living.
Prompted by this discovery, he immediately directed Major General M.S. Rathore, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 17 Mountain Division, to urgently address the situation.
Responding swiftly to the Governor’s directive, the Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army undertook the task of electrifying Dichu. Despite the formidable challenges posed by the rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions, the army successfully established a power supply to the village.
This development is expected to significantly improve the daily lives of the residents and serve as a source of encouragement for the community residing in this remote and strategically sensitive area.
The impact of this initiative extends beyond just electricity. The project also included improvements to local housing, such as the painting of tin roofs, which has enhanced both the visual appeal and the environmental well-being of the village. These combined efforts have infused a new sense of vitality into Dichu, transforming it from a seemingly overlooked border post into a focal point of national attention and care.
The villagers of Dichu have expressed their profound gratitude to Governor Mathur and the Indian Army for this transformative development. The arrival of electricity is seen by many as the dawn of a brighter future, promising access to better education, healthcare, communication, and economic prospects that were previously unattainable.
Governor Mathur has publicly commended the dedication and efficiency of the Trishakti Corps, acknowledging their swift and selfless service in making this achievement a reality.
