APCC Chief Bhupen Borah Files FIR Over Alleged Fake Audio Clip Linking Him to Coal Trade Extortion

Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah has filed a formal complaint with Hatigaon Police Station, claiming that a fake audio clip being circulated on social media is part of a larger conspiracy to defame and blackmail him.

The audio allegedly links Borah’s name to a monetary demand from a coal trader, a charge the Congress leader has unequivocally denied.

According to the FIR lodged on Sunday, Borah accused certain individuals of deliberately orchestrating the release of the audio — purportedly a phone conversation between two unidentified persons — in which his name is allegedly used to demand money from someone involved in the coal business. “One of the persons in the said conversations allegedly demanded money from the other person referring to me. The person at the other end seems to be in coal business. The conversation has also referred to one of our leaders,” Borah stated in his complaint.

Calling the incident a politically motivated move, Borah alleged that the attempt was made to tarnish his public image and discredit his political stance, particularly in relation to the Congress party’s aggressive opposition to the illegal coal syndicate operations in Assam. “This is a conspiracy to weaken our fight against illegal coal syndicate,” the FIR said.

Borah named Likhan Kumbang as the individual responsible for uploading the audio clip and urged the police to initiate legal proceedings under the Information Technology Act, 2000. He called for immediate intervention to prevent further spread of what he described as a “fabricated” audio meant to malign his reputation and coerce him into silence.

“The audio chat has been uploaded to blackmail me and weaken my political stand,” Borah stated in the FIR, appealing for the matter to be taken up with urgency.

Hatigaon police have acknowledged the receipt of the complaint and confirmed that preliminary verification is underway. However, no official action or charges have been announced so far against the named individual.

This controversy emerges at a politically sensitive time in Assam, as the state heads into a high-stakes election season, with debates around illegal mining and syndicate activities heating up across party lines.
