Manipur NPP MLA to Challenge Waqf Amendment Act in Supreme Court; BJP Condemns Arson Attack on Minority Leader’s Home
Imphal: Amid growing controversy surrounding the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, Manipur National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan has announced that he will challenge the legislation in the Supreme Court, calling it a violation of Muslim rights.
In a video message posted online, Hassan stated, “The Waqf Amendment Act 2025 violates the rights of Muslims. I personally condemn and reject this Act. I will challenge it in the Supreme Court.”
Hassan’s decision comes in the wake of unrest in Manipur’s Thoubal district, where the house of BJP Minority Morcha President Md Asker Ali was set ablaze by an angry mob on Sunday. The attack was allegedly triggered by Ali’s earlier support for the Waqf Amendment Act, which he later retracted publicly through a Facebook video, apologising to the community and calling for the Act’s repeal.
The Manipur BJP has strongly condemned the arson attack. In an official statement, the party said, “Such unfortunate incidents shall not happen in the future,” assuring that appropriate steps will be taken to maintain peace and safety.
The Waqf Amendment Act 2025, recently passed by both Houses of Parliament, has sparked mixed reactions across the country. While the Centre has framed it as a reformative step to ensure better governance and transparency of Waqf properties, critics allege that it undermines community autonomy and threatens heritage assets.
The situation remains tense in minority-dominated areas of Manipur, with political and civil leaders urging calm and legal recourse over mob action.
