Bhuvneshwar Kumar Ascends to IPL Pacer Pinnacle, Overtakes Bravo in Wicket Tally
Sports: In a historic moment during the Indian Premier League clash at Wankhede Stadium on April 7th, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s seasoned pacer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, etched his name in the record books by becoming the highest wicket-taking fast bowler in the tournament’s history. This significant achievement came as he surpassed the illustrious West Indies legend, Dwayne Bravo.
The landmark wicket arrived during RCB’s encounter against Mumbai Indians, when Bhuvneshwar successfully dismissed the dangerous Tilak Varma. While he conceded 48 runs in his spell, this crucial scalp propelled his overall IPL wicket count to 184 from 179 matches. This feat eclipsed Dwayne Bravo’s impressive record of 183 wickets amassed in 161 IPL appearances.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar now stands as the third-highest wicket-taker overall in the Indian Premier League. Ahead of him are spin maestros Yuzvendra Chahal of Punjab Kings, who has taken 206 wickets in 162 matches, and Piyush Chawla, with 192 wickets in 192 games.
The match itself saw Mumbai Indians win the toss and elect to field. Despite an early setback with the dismissal of Phil Salt, a formidable 91-run partnership between Virat Kohli (67) and Devdutt Padikkal (37) put RCB in a commanding position. Skipper Rajat Patidar (64) and Jitesh Sharma (40*) further accelerated the innings, guiding RCB to a formidable total of 221/5.
Mumbai Indians’ chase saw them stutter to 99/4 in 12 overs. However, a blistering 89-run stand between Tilak Varma (56) and captain Hardik Pandya (42) reignited their hopes. Ultimately, disciplined bowling from Krunal Pandya (4/45), Josh Hazlewood (2/37), and the record-breaking Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/48) ensured that RCB secured a hard-fought 12-run victory.
Following this result, Royal Challengers Bengaluru now occupy the third spot on the league table with three wins out of four matches, remarkably all secured away from their home ground. Conversely, Mumbai Indians find themselves in eighth position, having managed only one win in their five outings.
