Meghalaya: Strict Ban Imposed on Toxic Fishing in Umiam River
Shillong: The East Khasi Hills District Magistrate has officially outlawed the use of toxic chemicals and explosive substances for fishing within the Umlyngka village boundary along the Umiam River. This decisive action follows increasing concerns and reports detailing illegal and environmentally damaging fishing practices plaguing the area.
The prohibitory order, enacted under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), specifically targets the Umiam River stretch extending from Sdad Wah Umkhrah to Sdad Jlu. It unequivocally forbids any fishing methods employing bleaching powder, ammonium-sulphate, pesticides, dynamite, and other destructive implements, including the use of unauthorized fishing nets.
Government authorities have voiced significant apprehension regarding the detrimental effects of these illicit activities on the delicate river ecosystem. The introduction of poisonous substances not only presents a severe danger to the diverse aquatic life inhabiting the Umiam but also carries the potential for lasting damage to the surrounding environment and poses risks to public health.
This stringent order has been implemented with the primary objective of preserving the ecological integrity of the Umiam River and ensuring the robust protection of its aquatic biodiversity.
Local inhabitants and communities residing near the river have been strongly encouraged to collaborate fully with the administrative directives and promptly report any observed instances of unlawful fishing. Individuals found in violation of this order will be subject to legal penalties as stipulated under the relevant sections of the BNSS.
Furthermore, the administration has issued a public appeal to foster greater awareness regarding the critical need to conserve the region’s invaluable natural resources for the benefit and enjoyment of generations to come.
This decisive action comes after prior reports emerged highlighting the widespread occurrence of fishing activities involving the use of harmful toxic chemicals in the Umiam River.
