Assam Congress Faces Twin Challenges: Internal Corruption Allegations and BJP Confrontation Ahead of Panchayat Polls

Guwahati: In a politically charged atmosphere leading up to the Assam panchayat elections, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah revealed that 17 complaints alleging monetary irregularities in ticket distribution have surfaced from five districts.

He announced his proposal to Congress high command representative Jitendra Singh for the immediate formation of an enquiry committee, nominating senior leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Pawan Singh Ghatowar, and Debabrata Saikia to lead the investigation. Borah pledged decisive action against anyone found guilty of corruption.

Borah’s demeanor turned aggressive as he addressed the BJP’s alleged double standards on corruption, accusing the ruling party of shielding its own members from scrutiny. “No one dares to speak up against Pijush Hazarika receiving money from the syndicate. No one speaks out against Padma Hazarika’s scandal,” he asserted, raising questions about the efficacy of opposition politics in the state.

He further accused the BJP of employing “money power, muscle power, and the police” to intimidate Congress candidates, fueled by fears of losing the Chief Minister’s position, and warned against the state descending into a state of lawlessness akin to Bihar or Tripura.

Clarifying the nature of ongoing opposition unity talks, Borah stated that they were not directly related to the panchayat elections, hinting that the opposition’s strategy would be revealed post-election results on May 11.

Responding to internal criticism, particularly allegations of favouritism from party member Sufia Begum, Borah maintained impartiality, stating, “Every member of the party is close to me; there is no particular favourite.” He committed to taking swift action against any substantiated claims of misconduct, specifically promising to remove Lakshman if the allegations are proven true.

Borah’s pronouncements reflect the Assam Congress’s efforts to navigate a complex landscape of internal challenges and external political pressures. The establishment of an independent enquiry committee is perceived as a critical step in restoring public trust and demonstrating the party’s commitment to transparency.

As the panchayat elections approach, the Congress aims to project an image of resilience and accountability, signalling its readiness to challenge the BJP’s dominance.
