Manipuri Play to Showcase Historical Ties between Assam and Manipur

Imphal: A Manipuri courtyard play, “Phambal,” is set to be staged in Hojai, Assam, highlighting the historical relationship between the two states.

The play is part of a cultural exchange initiative by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council (MSSLC).

The play, scripted by renowned playwright Ranjit Ningthouja and directed by Iboyaima Khuman, portrays the cordial ties between the Ahom Kingdom of Assam and the Manipur Kingdom, marked by diplomacy, trade, and intermarriages.

The play aims to showcase the long history of political, cultural, and economic interactions between the Ahom and Meitei people.

The Ahom Kingdom, established by people of Tai origin, later became the modern state of Assam. The Meiteis, who ruled the Kangleipak Kingdom, evolved into the present-day Manipur state.

Notably, the Ahom kingdom assisted Manipur in recovering its throne from Burmese occupation in 1765 and 1767.

A 15-member female artist team from the Western Cultural Association, Manipur, has embarked on a performance tour of Assam, starting with Hojai.

The team was flagged off by MSSLC Lifetime General Secretary Shougrakpam Hemanta at the Royal Palace gate in Imphal. The play will be staged in various places across Assam where Manipuris are inhabited.
