Transport Department Officer Among Six Arrested in Guwahati for Alleged Extortion from Material Transport Vehicles
Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on corruption within the transport sector, the Basistha Police on Friday, April 18, arrested Naba Deka, an Enforcement Officer posted at the Transport Department’s Betkuchi office, for allegedly extorting money from vehicles transporting construction materials.
Deka, a resident of Hatigaon and originally from Nalbari, was apprehended following multiple complaints of illegal monetary collection in the Jorabat, 14th Mile, and Khanapara regions.
The trucks and dumpers targeted were reportedly carrying stone, sand, and soil without valid permits, and Deka is accused of exploiting this to solicit unauthorized payments.
According to police sources, two FIRs were registered at Basistha Police Station, prompting swift action and leading to the arrest.
Alongside Deka, five other individuals were also taken into custody in connection with the case. They have been identified as Saurav Rongpi, Kulen Rongpi, Naziruddin Ahmed, Bipul Ingti, and Nongkur.
The arrests come amid heightened public concern and long-standing allegations against Deka, eventually resulting in a suo motu action by the authorities.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for tighter oversight and accountability within enforcement mechanisms, particularly in departments overseeing high-value logistics like construction material transport.
