Assam Congress Sets Up High-Level Probe Panel Amid Corruption Allegations in Panchayat Polls

Guwahati: In a significant move aimed at restoring internal discipline and upholding party ethics, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has constituted a high-powered Investigation Committee to probe allegations of corruption, sabotage, and misconduct during the recently held Panchayat elections.

The step, initiated under the directives of AICC General Secretary in-charge of Assam, Shri Jitendra Singh, signals the party’s firm resolve to address internal discontent and reinforce accountability.

Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Shri Paban Singh Ghatowar has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Committee. He will lead the investigation into a wide range of complaints, including irregularities in ticket distribution, alleged cash-for-ticket exchanges, unexplained candidate withdrawals, and reported instances of Congress candidates deliberately conceding seats to opposition parties.

The Committee has been vested with full authority to summon party members and conduct a meticulous inquiry. It has been made clear that attendance in response to the Committee’s summons will take precedence over any ongoing campaign responsibilities. Party insiders view this directive as a strong message that internal scrutiny will not be sidelined by electoral obligations.

With a deadline of May 7, 2025, the panel is expected to submit its report to both the AICC General Secretary and the APCC President.

The APCC has reiterated that those found guilty of anti-party activities or ethical breaches will face stringent disciplinary action, in keeping with the Congress party’s stated commitment to transparency and fairness.

The move comes amid growing dissatisfaction within party ranks and public criticism over how the Panchayat election process was managed, raising questions about leadership and candidate integrity at the grassroots level.
