Sikkim: ECI Dismisses Claims of Electoral Roll Irregularities, Cites Zero Formal Objections
Gangtok: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has firmly denied recent allegations questioning the accuracy of the electoral roll, stating that these claims lack foundation and were not substantiated by any official objections or appeals during the most recent revision.
In a formal announcement released yesterday, April 21, from its headquarters in New Delhi, the ECI emphasized that no legitimate grievances were lodged throughout the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of Electoral Rolls, which concluded in January 2025. This nationwide exercise encompassed Sikkim, where the Commission specifically noted a complete absence of appeals at both the district and state levels, as mandated by the Representation of the People Act.
The finalized voter list for Sikkim includes 4,69,925 electors. The revision process engaged a substantial workforce of 573 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and 822 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) representing various political parties. Notwithstanding this significant participation, the ECI highlighted that not a single formal objection was registered, a fact the Commission believes underscores the transparency and impartiality of the entire procedure.
Across the nation, the SSR spanned all 4,123 Assembly Constituencies and involved the active participation of over 13.87 lakh BLAs and nearly 10.5 lakh polling stations. ECI data, previously released on March 7, further reveals that states including Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim reported no appeals during the entire revision timeline.
The ECI’s clarification is a direct response to assertions made by certain individuals and groups raising doubts about the integrity of the electoral rolls. Given the absence of any legal challenges or appeals, the Commission has unequivocally stated that the published electoral rolls are definitive and should be considered precise.
