Manipur Pays Homage to 1891 Heroes on Khongjom Day 2025; Governor Calls for Unity, Condemns Terror Attack

Thoubal: Manipur observed Khongjom Day 2025 with solemn reverence at the historic Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Thoubal district, commemorating the valiant heroes of the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the tribute, honouring the supreme sacrifice of legendary warriors like Paona Brajabashi who laid down their lives in defence of their homeland.

The day began with traditional rituals and floral tributes at Kheba Hill and the statue of Paona Brajabashi, followed by a gun salute and Tarpon offerings at the Khongjom River. Dignitaries including former Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh, MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, and top state officials joined the ceremony to pay their respects.

In his address, Governor Bhalla described the Khongjom battle as “a symbol of honour, patriotism, and self-determination,” calling on the youth to carry forward its legacy. “Khongjom Day is a tribute to those brave sons of Manipur who sacrificed their lives for our motherland,” he said.

Condemning the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, the Governor expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He reiterated the importance of unity and vigilance in the face of such tragedies.

Highlighting state developmental initiatives, Governor Bhalla cited the inauguration of IT centres in Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Senapati under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the launch of ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ to combat drug abuse, and a record allocation under MGNREGA for 2025–26. He also mentioned efforts to rehabilitate internally displaced persons and generate youth employment through the ‘Hunar Se Rojgar’ scheme of the Ministry of Tourism.

Concluding his speech, the Governor urged Manipur’s youth to uphold the ideals of justice, equality, and brotherhood, asserting that “true tribute to Khongjom’s martyrs lies in building a peaceful, progressive, and united Manipur.”
