Assam: Prime Accused in Jorhat Lynching Case Shot While Attempting Escape, Hospitalised Under Custody

Guwahati: Abdul Noor alias Riju, the prime accused in the high-profile Jorhat lynching case, was reportedly shot by police during an attempted escape while in custody.

The encounter occurred during the night hours when he was being escorted for an ongoing investigation related to the April 20 incident that has shocked the town.

Sources said Noor tried to flee despite repeated warnings from law enforcement officials. When he failed to comply, police were forced to open fire, resulting in a gunshot wound to his leg. He was immediately rushed to Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH), where he is currently receiving treatment under strict police watch.

The dramatic development comes in the wake of a gruesome mob lynching that claimed the life of 34-year-old Debanga Bhusan Barua. The incident took place near a Bihu celebration in Chandan Nagar, Jorhat, when Barua reportedly stepped in to pacify a group of quarrelling teenagers. In a tragic turn, the group turned on him, subjecting him to a brutal assault. He succumbed to his injuries later at a private hospital.

The case has sparked widespread outrage in the region, with demands for swift justice. Police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and all individuals responsible for the heinous act will be brought to justice.
