Tourist Permits to North Sikkim Suspended Amid Heavy Rainfall and Landslides; Over 1,000 Stranded

Gangtok: Tourist movement to North Sikkim has been suspended until further notice following continuous heavy rainfall and multiple landslides that have cut off key access routes, leaving over 1,000 people stranded. The Sikkim Police Permit Cell issued an official order on Thursday halting all tourist permits to the region effective April 25.

The decision comes in response to dangerous conditions on the Lachen-Chungthang and Lachung-Chungthang roads, which have been rendered impassable by major landslides at Munshithang and Lema/Bob. While the road up to Chungthang remains operational, officials strongly advise against night travel due to the heightened risk of fresh slides.

“In view of the present situation, no permits will be issued for tourists planning to travel to North Sikkim,” the Permit Cell said, adding that even permits already issued for April 25 have been revoked.

Popular tourist destinations such as Lachen, Lachung, and Gurudongmar Lake have become inaccessible. Tour operators have been ordered to halt all trips to the area, and police are coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety of stranded tourists and prevent further movement into high-risk zones.

A police official appealed to the public: “We request everyone to cooperate and follow safety protocols.”

The disruption comes during peak travel season in Sikkim. However, the steep and fragile terrain is especially vulnerable to landslides during periods of heavy rain. The Tourism Department has urged tourists to postpone their plans or divert to safer locations within the state.

Hotels, guides, and travel agencies have been informed of the permit suspension and are working to manage cancellations and traveler safety. Those already in Sikkim are encouraged to monitor updates through official government sources and avoid relying on unofficial or unverified information.

Authorities are keeping a close watch on weather and road conditions and will issue further advisories as the situation evolves.
