Guwahati Railway Station Fortifies Security with AI-Powered Surveillance and Panic Buttons
Guwahati: Guwahati railway station has significantly enhanced its security infrastructure with the recent installation of a sophisticated network comprising 135 artificial intelligence-powered CCTV cameras and 20 strategically placed panic buttons. This substantial upgrade is a key component of the Northeast Frontier Railway’s (NF Railway) broader initiative to modernize surveillance systems throughout its network, prioritizing the safety and security of passengers alongside improved operational oversight.
The newly implemented AI-driven CCTV system boasts advanced features such as facial recognition and intrusion detection. This technology is engineered to automatically identify and flag individuals with known criminal records, simultaneously alerting railway authorities in real time should any tampering with the camera system occur. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NF Railway, officially announced the commencement of this advanced surveillance network at Guwahati railway station, confirming the deployment of 135 cameras across various crucial points within the station premises.
Supporting the AI-powered surveillance is a dedicated round-the-clock monitoring operation housed within the Railway Protection Force (RPF) control room. Complementing this proactive surveillance are the 20 panic buttons installed at critical locations throughout the station. These buttons empower passengers facing distress to instantly send alerts to the authorities, ensuring a swift and effective response to any emergency situation. Mr. Sharma elaborated on the operational protocol, stating that the RPF control room maintains continuous vigilance, ready to deploy personnel immediately upon receiving an alert, whether triggered by the AI system or a passenger activating a panic button.
In a parallel effort to bolster security operations, a new Escort Mobilisation Hall has been inaugurated at Guwahati railway station. This centralized coordination hub is designed to streamline the deployment of RPF personnel, thereby enhancing the efficiency of emergency response at one of the region’s most vital and heavily trafficked transportation centers.
The NF Railway is committed to extending these security enhancements to other key stations within its jurisdiction. Haiborgaon is already undergoing similar upgrades with the installation of CCTV cameras, and plans are in place to introduce panic buttons and other advanced safety features in due course. Mr. Sharma emphasized that Guwahati railway station served as the initial site for the implementation of this new technology, with a phased rollout planned for other significant stations in the future. Currently, the NF Railway oversees a network of over 1,000 active surveillance cameras across 50 strategically important stations, with ongoing efforts to further expand and upgrade this infrastructure.
Beyond the confines of railway stations, the NF Railway is also prioritizing safety at level crossings. The railway has installed high-resolution CCTV cameras at 28 level crossing gates and has successfully eliminated 28 such crossings in the past year through the construction of essential infrastructure like overbridges and underpasses. Mr. Sharma affirmed the railway’s commitment to enhancing safety at these critical intersections.
