Imphal Observes Somber Anniversary as Manipur Crisis Enters Third Year
Imphal: A significant public convention unfolded today at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal, Manipur, as the region marked two years since the eruption of the ongoing crisis.
The solemn event, orchestrated by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), witnessed a substantial turnout of individuals deeply affected by the protracted unrest.
The assembly served as a poignant commemoration for the victims of the ethnic strife that ignited in May 2023. Attendees paid their respects by offering floral tributes, honouring the lives tragically lost during the two years of conflict.
Throughout the convention, speakers passionately underscored the critical need for unity, the restoration of peace, and the pursuit of justice within the troubled state. Their words highlighted the remarkable resilience demonstrated by the communities bearing the brunt of the crisis and conveyed an urgent appeal for a lasting resolution to the protracted conflict.
The crisis, stemming from deep-seated ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, has plunged Manipur into a period of extensive violence, widespread displacement, and disturbing allegations of human rights abuses. Reports indicate that over 60,000 individuals have been forced from their homes, and countless lives have been tragically lost during the two years of turmoil.
Those present at the convention voiced their unwavering demands for governmental accountability, intensified peace-building initiatives, and steadfast protection of Manipur’s territorial and cultural heritage. The public meeting also saw the participation of leaders representing diverse communities within the state. Following the day’s proceedings, COCOMI announced its decision to formally adopt a resolution, which is slated for submission to key leaders at the Central government level.
