Amit Shah Directs NCEL to Explore New Export Opportunities for Tripura’s Aromatic Rice
Agartala: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) to explore new opportunities for exporting aromatic rice from Tripura. Shah, who is also the Minister of Cooperation, issued this directive during a high-level review meeting in New Delhi to assess the progress of NCEL, National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL), and Bharatiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Ltd (BBSSL).
Tripura is renowned for its aromatic rice, particularly the “Kali Khasa” and “Biran” varieties. These rice types are cultivated organically and are valued for their unique taste and nutritional qualities. Shah’s directive aims to capitalize on the global demand for these premium products.
In addition to aromatic rice, Shah directed NCEL to explore new opportunities for exporting sugar from cooperative sugar mills, organic cotton, and coarse grains. He also suggested possibilities of partnership with big companies for exporting fresh vegetables to Gulf countries and special potato varieties.
Shah set an ambitious target of ₹2 lakh crore exports by NCEL and directed the organization to explore exports of three new and specific products that are not currently being exported from India. Furthermore, Shah instructed NCEL to route all exports of cooperative institutions through its platform, enabling a turnover of ₹20,000-30,000 crore and net profit after taxes and operating costs to be returned to the cooperatives.
