Digboi Erupts: BJP Worker’s Head Shaved Amidst Viral Video Fallout
Guwahati: A wave of intense public outrage has swept through Digboi, culminating in the forced tonsuring of a BJP worker, Kalpajyoti Phukan, by members of the Moran community. The drastic action follows the circulation of a controversial phone conversation that ignited deep resentment within the community.
The catalyst for this unrest stems from a viral video featuring BJP MLA Suren Phukan and independent panchayat poll candidate Junmoni Moran. The video, which rapidly disseminated across social media and garnered significant state media attention, purportedly depicted Junmoni confronting the MLA over alleged violations of the model code of conduct during the Borhapjan Panchayat election campaign.
In the aftermath of the video’s release, supporters of MLA Phukan filed a formal complaint against Junmoni Moran at the Doomdooma Police Station. This led to her arrest and subsequent detention, further escalating the already tense political climate.
While Junmoni Moran was in custody, a recorded phone conversation surfaced, revealing a heated exchange between Congress leader Lachit Moran, also known as Rajiv, and Nani Gopal Dutta, a close associate of MLA Phukan. During the call, BJP worker Kalpajyoti Phukan was heard questioning Lachit Moran’s presence in Tingrai, a statement perceived by many as a veiled threat.
This phone call ignited a firestorm within the Moran community. Enraged locals forcibly removed Kalpajyoti Phukan from his residence in Bogapani and transported him to the Tingrai market. There, in a public act of protest, they compelled him to kneel and shaved his head.
Law enforcement intervened, rescuing Kalpajyoti Phukan from the scene. Subsequently, Digboi police detained Akash Moran, the former president of the Moran Students’ Union’s Digboi regional unit, and brought him to the Digboi police station for interrogation. The incident has plunged Digboi into a state of heightened tension, prompting authorities to maintain a vigilant watch to prevent any further escalation of violence.
