Assam Government Extends Financial Aid to Pahalgam Terror Attack Victims’ Families

Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet, in a compassionate move, has sanctioned a financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for each of the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in the recent devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The heart-wrenching incident resulted in the tragic death of 26 individuals, a significant number of whom were tourists.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while formally announcing this empathetic decision, conveyed his profound sorrow and emphasized Assam’s deep understanding of the pain inflicted by such acts of violence, given the state’s own history with insurgency. Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Chief Minister Sarma articulated, “We can truly feel the agony of these families. As a mark of our respect for the sacrifices made by the departed souls and to stand in solidarity with their grieving families, our government has resolved to provide this modest financial support.”

It is noteworthy that the Assam government had initially declared its intention to provide this ex-gratia relief on April 24th, demonstrating its commitment to supporting all 26 families impacted by the reprehensible act of terror. Furthermore, Chief Minister Sarma informed the press about the heightened security measures currently in place along Assam’s border with Bangladesh, a precautionary step taken in light of the prevailing security scenario to effectively counter any potential cross-border threats.
