Manipur Police Net Five Militants in Crackdown on Extortion
Imphal: Manipur Police, in a concerted effort with security forces, has significantly intensified its intelligence-driven combing operations and proactive cordon-and-search initiatives throughout the state. This heightened security response aims to effectively curb the persistent issues of extortion and other associated criminal activities that have been plaguing the region.
Over the course of the past two days, these rigorous operations have yielded substantial results with the apprehension of five militants who have established links to various proscribed insurgent groups operating within Manipur. These arrests were made across different districts, demonstrating the widespread nature of the security forces’ efforts.
On May 6th, security forces achieved a significant breakthrough in Imphal East District with the arrest of two active operatives belonging to the KYKL (SOREPA) group. The individuals identified as Yumkhaibam Nanao Singh, 27 years old and a resident of Andro Kharam Leikai, and Chingakham Norenkumar Singh, 28 years old from Andro Sanapat, were apprehended in the vicinity of Andro Khuman Hill. At the time of their arrest, both individuals were found to be in possession of mobile phones and are currently undergoing thorough interrogation to elicit further information.
In another successful operation conducted on the same day, police in Imphal East District apprehended Khangembam Joyson Meitei, a 28-year-old active member of the banned outfit KCP (Apunba). His arrest took place in Khongman Khagembam Leirak, and he is reportedly implicated in the extortion of funds from educational institutions located within the Imphal area. During the operation that led to his capture, law enforcement officials also seized a mobile phone and a two-wheeler believed to be connected to his illicit activities.
Extending their operations to Thoubal District, police successfully apprehended Laishram Basanta Singh, a 53-year-old member of the RPF/PLA, at Yairipok Bazar. Upon his arrest, authorities recovered a mobile phone containing two SIM cards, which are now part of the ongoing investigation.
Earlier in the week, on May 5th, the security forces made another significant arrest in Kakching District. Elangbam Jogen Singh, a 43-year-old cadre belonging to the KCP (PWG), was apprehended at Wabagai Lamkhai Bazar in Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai. During the arrest, authorities recovered a mobile phone, two SIM cards, and an Aadhaar card from his possession.
In a separate but equally important development highlighting the broader efforts to maintain law and order, the Manipur Police Traffic Control Wing successfully intercepted and seized an Alto 800 LXI car near the Airport Gate along Tiddim Road on May 6th. The vehicle had been flagged as “Not to Be Transacted” by the Public Vehicles Department in Kolkata due to its connection with an anti-motor theft case. The driver of the vehicle was promptly arrested, and the car has been impounded as part of the ongoing investigation.
Furthermore, the sustained efforts of traffic enforcement in Manipur between January and April 2025 have resulted in the issuance of e-challans amounting to a substantial Rs 1.74 crore for a wide range of traffic violations. Demonstrating their proactive approach, on May 5th alone, police managed to recover 16 stolen vehicles during a specialized drive and also took action against vehicles flouting regulations by removing tinted glasses from 69 vehicles.
Reiterating their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the state, authorities have firmly stated their intention to continue these intensive operations. The primary goal remains the complete dismantling of extortion networks and a significant improvement in the overall law and order situation across Manipur.
