Sikkim’s ‘My Child from Wild’ Program Forges Deep Bonds Between People and Himalayan Wildlife

GANGTOK— The Himalayan Zoological Park in Bulbuley has unveiled a moving conservation initiative that’s capturing hearts across Sikkim and beyond.

Launched in June in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, the “My Child from Wild” animal adoption program invites individuals, families, schools, and organizations to sponsor animals, directly supporting their food, health care, and welfare.

Designed to foster a personal connection with Himalayan wildlife, the initiative is as inclusive as it is impactful—welcoming adopters from ages 1 to 120. Among the most touching stories is that of 8-year-old Pennor D. Bomzon, who used her birthday and pocket money to adopt a Leopard Cat for six months. Her gesture has sparked inspiration across the region, proving that compassion knows no age.

Celebrities and community groups are also stepping forward. Shyamashree Sherpa, lead actress in the acclaimed Sikkimese film Tara – The Lost Star, adopted Pokchi, the zoo’s oldest Red Panda, showing how public figures can help amplify conservation efforts. Meanwhile, Chundyu N. Gensapa and his motorcycle group, Ride Sikkim, adopted Chimi—a rare Clouded Leopard—along with two Red Pandas, in a remarkable show of collective goodwill.

Participants in the program receive tangible benefits such as free zoo entry, access to special events, and educational opportunities focused on their adopted animals. More importantly, they become ambassadors for wildlife protection, actively contributing to the care of vulnerable species like Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, and Himalayan Monals housed at the park.

The Himalayan Zoological Park’s ex-situ conservation efforts are gaining new momentum through this initiative, which not only enhances the quality of animal care but also raises vital public awareness. As more people come forward to adopt, the message is clear: building a bond with wildlife is not just possible—it’s powerful, personal, and profoundly needed.
