CM Sangma Reviews Wahumkhrah Riverfront Project, Stresses Environmental and Civic Goals Ahead of National Games
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma conducted a detailed inspection of the ongoing Wahumkhrah Riverfront Development Project, hailing it as a transformative step toward environmental restoration, urban beautification, and readiness for the upcoming National Games in 2027.
The Chief Minister called the initiative a cornerstone of the government’s vision to balance ecological well-being with modern urban development.
Funded under a state government scheme, the multi-phase project seeks to rejuvenate the Wahumkhrah River while reimagining the riverbank as a vibrant and functional public space. “The project is a very important one—both from an environmental perspective and for the overall beautification of the city,” Sangma remarked during the site visit. He emphasised that restoring the river’s health is as vital as enhancing its aesthetic and recreational value.
The project’s first phase concentrates on building essential infrastructure and launching an intensive river cleaning drive. Subsequent phases will introduce commercial zones and community facilities such as shops, eateries, parking areas, and even hostel accommodations, aiming to improve both local engagement and tourist experiences.
Calling on the community to become stakeholders in the initiative, the Chief Minister urged citizens to contribute to the upkeep of rivers like Wahumkhrah. “We will work together to achieve our common goal,” he stated, underscoring the importance of public participation in fostering sustainable urban growth.
As Shillong prepares to welcome athletes and visitors for the 2027 National Games, the Wahumkhrah Riverfront Development Project stands as a flagship component of broader efforts to modernise infrastructure while preserving the state’s ecological heritage.
