Amid Rising Tensions, Assam CM Urges Cancellation of Remaining Bihu Events from May 10
GUWAHATI — In light of the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed for the cancellation of all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from May 10 onwards, effectively ending the month-long festivities across the state.
Sharing the message on social media, Sarma extended his heartfelt gratitude to the people of Assam for their enthusiastic participation in the Rongali Bihu celebrations over the past several weeks. “Over the past month, we have joyfully celebrated Bihu across Assam through numerous cultural events. I sincerely thank everyone for their participation and contributions,” he said.
However, acknowledging the prevailing national mood amid heightened border tensions, Sarma urged a respectful conclusion to the celebrations. “The time has now come to conclude this festive season. I humbly appeal that all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from 10th May onwards be kindly cancelled. Let us bring this vibrant celebration to a graceful close, with the same unity and spirit in which it was celebrated.”
The chief minister’s appeal follows a night of intense developments on May 8, when explosions were reported in Jammu’s border districts, triggering widespread anxiety. With the country on alert and armed forces on high readiness, the move to end public festivities is being viewed as a precautionary step to maintain focus on national security and public sentiment.
