Assam Police Nets Two More in Pakistan “Defense” Crackdown

Guwahati, Assam – The Assam Police have apprehended two additional individuals in connection with allegedly “defending” Pakistan, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The latest arrests bring the total number of people detained in this ongoing crackdown to 50 since the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam.

The two newly arrested individuals have been identified as Jobbur Islam, a resident of Biswanath, and Ruhul Amin, hailing from Morigaon. Chief Minister Sarma shared this information in a post on the social media platform X, reiterating the state government’s firm stance on the matter.

In his post, Sarma stated, “Update on Crackdown against traitors. Total of 50 anti-nationals are now enjoying prison hospitality. We will continue to hunt these traitors.” This strong statement underscores the government’s commitment to pursuing those accused of expressing support for Pakistan, particularly in the aftermath of the April 22 terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals.

Among those previously arrested in this widening investigation is AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam, who faces serious charges including sedition. His arrest stemmed from allegations of “defending” Pakistan and its purported involvement in the recent terror incident.

In a separate development, Chief Minister Sarma also addressed the security situation along the India-Bangladesh border in Assam. He informed the media that the border region has remained largely peaceful over the past ten days, with no reports of any unusual or untoward activity.

Sarma emphasized that border patrolling has been significantly intensified as a precautionary measure to ensure continued vigilance and to effectively prevent any attempts at cross-border infiltration. While noting the positive current situation, the Chief Minister also mentioned that the central government, with its distinct security apparatus, would be better positioned to provide more comprehensive details regarding border security.
