A new era for Sikkim cricket: CM Tamang inaugurates automated irrigation system at SCA Ground
GANGTOK — In a major boost to Sikkim’s sporting infrastructure, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang today inaugurated a new Automatic Pop-up Rain Gun Irrigation System at the Sikkim Cricket Association (SCA) Ground in Mining, Rangpo. The move is set to professionalise ground maintenance and elevate the quality of cricket played in the state.
The inaugural event was graced by the Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim, Justice Biswanath Sommader, as the chief guest. While addressing the gathering, CM Tamang underscored the importance of modern facilities for nurturing professional-level cricket. He noted that the automated system would not only guarantee consistent ground conditions for players but also significantly reduce manual labour and conserve water, a critical step towards sustainable infrastructure. The new system distributes water evenly across the entire field, which is crucial for maintaining a pitch and outfield that aligns with national standards.
Following the inauguration, a friendly exhibition match was played between local players and dignitaries, including the CM himself, further reinforcing the message that sports are vital for fostering community spirit and inspiring the youth. Justice Sommader lauded the initiative, remarking that a world-class infrastructure is a powerful tool for inspiring young athletes to take up sports seriously. Officials from the Sikkim Cricket Association expressed their gratitude, stating the new system is a landmark development in their efforts to professionalise the game within the state.
