A Spiralling Petrol Price Row Claims Life in Tripura’s Shalbagan
Agartala: What began as a heated exchange over the price of petrol in Tripura’s Shalbagan area on Sunday night tragically escalated into fatal violence, leaving one man dead and several others injured. The incident has sent ripples of concern through the local community, prompting a swift and ongoing investigation by law enforcement.
The initial flashpoint occurred when Khokan Das arrived to purchase petrol, and a disagreement over the cost allegedly spiralled into a physical altercation. The scuffle initially involved Das, Papan Debnath, and Sanjeeb Mukherjee, all of whom sustained injuries and were subsequently transported to a hospital by police.
However, the volatile situation took a graver turn when a group of enraged residents reportedly launched a retaliatory assault on Khokan Das and another individual, Rakesh Debnath. Both men were hospitalised following this second wave of violence. Tragically, Rakesh Debnath later succumbed to his injuries, becoming the sole fatality of the night’s events.
Police have acted decisively, apprehending multiple individuals implicated in the incident. These individuals have been presented before the court, with authorities requesting a three-day remand for further questioning. Khokan Das, though still receiving medical attention for his injuries, has been detained and is slated to appear in court once his health permits.
In the wake of the incident, authorities have registered two distinct cases as their comprehensive investigation continues. The Shalbagan area remains under enhanced police surveillance to avert any further escalation of unrest.
