AAMSU Stages Sit-in Protest Against Evictions in Kokrajhar, Submits Memorandum to CM
Kokrajhar: The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) on Thursday staged a two-hour sit-in protest at Gandhi Park in Kokrajhar, strongly condemning the state government’s ongoing eviction drives in various districts.
Led by the Kokrajhar district unit, the demonstration was part of a state-wide agitation held simultaneously across multiple district headquarters. The protests were triggered by recent eviction operations in Goalpara’s Hasilabeel, Mukalmua, and Bongaigaon—areas where, according to AAMSU, hundreds of families have been evicted without prior notice or adequate rehabilitation.
Protesters, including students and community members, carried placards and banners accusing the state government of pursuing “inhumane eviction policies.” They raised slogans demanding justice and resettlement for the affected families. The protest remained peaceful but emotionally charged as participants shared concerns about the growing displacement of marginalized communities.
At the end of the protest, AAMSU Kokrajhar submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma via the office of the District Commissioner. The memorandum demanded an immediate halt to the eviction drives and called for a humane approach to the treatment and rehabilitation of displaced families.
The issue has also drawn political attention, with senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia urging the Chief Minister to stop the evictions in Goalpara’s Hasilabeel, where 667 families reportedly received notices despite lacking alternative shelter.
The ongoing eviction controversy continues to provoke strong responses from student groups, civil society organisations, and opposition parties, who accuse the government of turning a blind eye to the human cost of displacement.
