AAP Leader Atishi Hospitalized Amidst Indefinite Hunger Strike Over Delhi Water Crisis

National Desk, 25t June: Delhi Water Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena was admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital after her health deteriorated on June 25 due to an indefinite hunger strike. Atishi’s blood sugar levels had dropped significantly, prompting medical intervention.

Atishi’s hunger strike, which entered its fifth day, is a protest against the Haryana government for not releasing 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Delhi amidst a severe water shortage in the capital.

On June 24, doctors from LNJP Hospital advised Atishi to be admitted due to adverse health effects from her hunger strike. Despite the recommendation, she continued her protest, reporting dropping blood pressure and sugar levels, weight loss, and high ketone levels, which pose long-term health risks. “No matter how much my body suffers, I will continue the fast till Haryana releases water,” Atishi stated.

AAP officials reported that Atishi’s blood sugar levels fell to 43 at midnight and further plummeted to 36 by 3 a.m. The party shared visuals of Atishi being taken to the hospital late at night. “Atishi’s blood sugar level fell to 36, so she has been admitted to LNJP Hospital,” tweeted AAP leader and Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj.

Atishi has accused the BJP-led Haryana government of withholding 100 MGD of water, affecting over 28 lakh people in Delhi. “All of Delhi’s water comes from neighboring states. The BJP government of Haryana has withheld 100 MGD or more than 46 crore liters of water, which is Delhi’s share,” she stated.

In response to the crisis, Delhi cabinet ministers convened at the hunger strike site in Jangpura and decided to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention to resolve the issue.
