AAP MP Raghav Chadha Criticizes Government’s ‘Billdozer,’ Describing it an Assault on Democracy in CEC Bill
National Desk, 13th December: Raghav Chadha, a Member of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party, expressed his strong disagreement with the recent approval of the CEC and other Election Commissioners (appointment, conditions of service and term of office) bill, 2023, in the Rajya Sabha. Chadha characterized the government’s actions as a ‘billdozer’ against democracy.
He underscored the pivotal role of an independent Election Commission in ensuring fair elections, stating that unbiased elections hinge on its autonomy. Chadha emphasized the Election Commission’s crucial responsibilities, including decisions on EVM machines, party symbols, and election schedules. Additionally, he indicated that legal advice might be sought, and there could be a potential challenge to the legislation in the Supreme Court.
Despite the Opposition exiting the proceedings in protest against the proposed law, the Rajya Sabha approved the legislation on Tuesday, addressing concerns related to the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
