Aasaa Set to Stage Delhi Protest Demanding ST Status for Assam’s Adivasis
Guwahati, 7th December: The All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (Aasaa) is gearing up for a significant demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on December 8, 2023.
This two-hour sit-in is poised to shed light on the enduring demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Adivasis of Assam, drawing attention to their plight. The protest is anticipated to mobilize over 300 participants, including leaders representing both central and district committees.
The Adivasi community, encompassing various groups such as Oraons, Santhals, Mundas, Kharias, Bhumij, Gonds, and Sawras, has long been recognized as one of the most marginalized communities in Assam.
Originating from the Chotanagpur plateau, their ancestors were brought to Assam’s tea estates during the early 19th century.
Despite Adivasis in states like Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand enjoying ST status, those in Assam continue to grapple for this recognition.
Raja Kujur, the joint secretary of Aasaa’s central committee, pointed out that the BJP has shown little interest in fulfilling its promise on this matter.
The lack of tangible action has led to criticism of local leaders, including Dibrugarh Parliamentary constituency MP and Union Minister of State Rameswar Teli, who hails from the tea garden community.
The upcoming protest in the capital city forms part of a broader movement spearheaded by various Adivasi organizations and ethnic tribes.
Their collective endeavor seeks recognition and rights that have been long denied, marking a crucial step in their ongoing struggle for justice and acknowledgment.
