AASU Suspends 100-Hour Blockade After OIL Offers Dialogue in 2 districts of Upper Assam
Guwahati, 30th March: In a significant development, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has decided to suspend its 100-hour blockade program aimed at Oil India Limited (OIL) operations in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.
This decision comes following Oil India Limited’s proposal for a bilateral discussion with AASU representatives, scheduled for April 5, 2024. The blockade, originally planned as a protest against OIL, sought to address various concerns regarding the company’s operations in the region.
The intervention of a potential dialogue has led AASU to temporarily halt protest activities, indicating a willingness to engage in constructive discourse to seek resolution. This move underscores AASU’s commitment to pursuing dialogue as a means of resolving issues amicably.
Oil India Limited’s proposal for a bipartite discussion signals a potential breakthrough in addressing the grievances raised by AASU. The proposed meeting, to include the Resident Commissioner of Environment (RCE), holds promise for fostering a conducive environment for meaningful dialogue.
The decision to suspend the blockade demonstrates AASU’s dedication to channeling efforts towards achieving tangible outcomes that address the concerns of the local community. By opting for engagement over confrontation, AASU aims to pave the way for constructive dialogue and resolution.
