ACC&I Strengthens Efforts to Support Consumer Rights and Local Businesses in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: The Arunachal Chamber of Commerce & Industries (ACC&I) has reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding consumer interests and bolstering local business operations throughout Arunachal Pradesh, responding to rapid shifts in global commerce that impact the national economy.

Founded in 1986 and affiliated with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), ACC&I has consistently led initiatives aimed at easing financial burdens and improving business conditions across the state. According to a recent press release, ACC&I President Tarh Nachung outlined the organization’s recent achievements, particularly in collaboration with the Department of Power (DoP) and the Arunachal Pradesh State Electricity Regulatory Commission (APSERC), which have led to significant reforms for electricity consumers.

Noteworthy reforms include:

  • Abolition of Minimum Charges: Since 2018, ACC&I’s efforts successfully led to the removal of minimum charges on electricity bills, reducing costs for both businesses and households.
  • Simplified Late Fee Interest: The late fees on overdue bills are now calculated with simple interest, not compound interest, reducing financial strain. ACC&I continues to push for further reductions from the current rate of 2% to 1% per month.
  • Reduced Security Deposits: The deposit required for power supply lines has been decreased from two months to one month, aiding cash flow for traders.
  • Flexible Payment Options: Security deposits over ₹10,000 can now be made with fixed deposits or bank guarantees, providing flexibility for consumers and supporting DoP operations.

ACC&I is also advocating for phased security deposit payments for large industrial consumers, viewing this as a catalyst for new business growth. Additionally, it invites MSMEs in Arunachal Pradesh to consider lifetime corporate membership, fostering a collective growth approach to enhance business resilience.

The Chamber is focused on promoting a tax-friendly environment in the state, encouraging local purchases by contractors and bulk vehicle buyers, which would help boost state revenue. ACC&I has a longstanding commitment to supporting tax compliance, actively implementing the Arunachal Pradesh Goods Tax Rules, 2005, and assisting the tax department in tracking traders evading taxes at check gates.

Through these ongoing initiatives, ACC&I seeks to propel economic growth and create a supportive environment for both businesses and consumers, aligning Arunachal Pradesh’s commerce with broader national and international standards.
