Accused Dies While Trying To Flee From Police Custody in Assam’s Sivasagar
Guwahati: An alleged bike thief who was being kept in prison passed away while attempting to flee from police in Assam’s Sivasagar district on Tuesday.
The accused identified as Babu Gowala.
According to reports, Gowala dove into a pond in an attempt to escape.
Reports claim that Putul Das’ black Pulsar bike was taken on Tuesday at Gaurisagar.
Babu was apprehended by the police and, according to CCTV evidence, during questioning he leaped into a pond next to the police station to escape.
Although Babu was immediately taken to Sivasagar Civil Hospital in serious condition, the doctor later proclaimed him dead.
Babu’s wife stated, “Last night, the cops arrived at our home and began pounding on the door, calling my husband. They entered through the broken door. We tried to hide the fact that we were bringing our kids because we believed they were kidnappers. They claimed that if the bike is not located, they will just question about it and then release my husband the next day.
“Following this, my spouse consented to accompany them. But how did he pass away that night? He was taken to the hospital, but they didn’t tell us about it. They told us the following morning after he was pronounced deceased.
The community gathered around the police station after the accused was found dead and demanded an investigation.
Police were deployed nearby to maintain control over the situation.
The in-charge of the police station Satyajit Borthakur was suspended with immediate effect.
Senior officers are leading the investigation into the incident by the police.
