Accused of Sexual Assaulting, SDF suspends Rup Narayan Rai

The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has suspended its member Rup Narayan Rai who has been arrested by South Sikkim Police in a POCSO Act case. Rai is accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in the complaint registered at Melli police station.

“The allegation raised against Rup Narayan Rai is highly commendable and the party takes the issue with utmost seriousness. The SDF Party which has worked tirelessly for the protection and empowerment of women and believes in protecting the rights and privileges of the people of Sikkim, condemns such acts of inhumane crime as alleged or reported. The Party has always maintained and upheld moral ethics and discipline within the party and expects its members to abide by discipline of the highest order,” said the SDF in a press statement on Monday.

“Therefore, in view of the directions made by the Party President under Article 11 of the Constitution of the Sikkim Democratic Front Party, the membership of Rup Narayan Rai is hereby suspended from the SDF Party till the final decision is taken in the said case by the concerned authority or competent Court of Law, following the due process of law. If found guilty, we expect the concerned authority to mete out the highest punishment appropriate for the alleged crime,” said the SDF.
